Soumitra has never been trapped within boundaries. He's a painter, a mixed media experimenter, a 3D creator, an illustrator, a graphic designer and a writer. He was trained at the Government Art College in Calcutta, when practicing doyens of the field worked to create artists who didn’t have to have narrow divisions to define them, but built their skills for them to fly. So, with a strong sense of the figure, Soumitra emerged as a prolific illustrator. In the 80s, Advertising was readily absorbing such talents and giving them exciting challenges that grew them if one used it as a training ground. Even while Soumitra was gaining respect in the Industry he was looking beyond to the 3D world. Not everyone has a multifarious capacity but Soumitra was training his diverse skills. Working with the best designers in Bollywood, he sharpened his Production Designer portfolio. Meanwhile he developed his Kali & Chaitanya series of paintings as well! Later, he gained highly competitive, demanding & completely soul satisfying response from ‘Sesame Street’. Three decades on the set planning, designing & executing taught him a lot. The Sesame Street team gave him a continuous ovation and kept inspiring him. They never stinted on the exposure including a close look at how the mammoth operation worked in the US. Critically, it was a period that developed his sense of the narrative while opening him out to various experimentations. The world of materials could now be accessed through the Sesame Street resource base.
