Ajit Kumar Mitra was awarded the Ankan Bivakar by the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad in recognition of his merit in painting in 2001.He was placed in first division with distinction. Earlier in 1986, he secured the 3rd prize in All India camel Colour Contest. He won fame as a light artist depicting famous contemporary events on the occasion of Durga Puja in Kolkata and Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar.
